Tennessee Library Day

Monday, April 9th is Tennessee Library Day. 

Please join us at the State Capitol to celebrate with people who love libraries! We'll have a short program for advocates at 3:30, and will serve refreshments in the hall from 4-5 p.m.


Registration is now open! You can register online, or in person at the TLA Conference next week. There is no cost for this event. Please spread the word; we want a good turnout. 


Please invite your legislators to join you at the Capitol, in the Old Supreme Court Chambers on the first floor. This is just steps away from where the General Assembly convenes at 5 p.m.

There's an app for TLA Conference

If you're attending the 2012 TLA Conference and have a smart phone, there is now an app for  you! 

You'll get a map of the conference space, exhibit hall, and a schedule of all of the sessions, keynotes and events occurring from March 21-23 at the Knoxville Marriott. You can build your own schedule, rate sessions and even create a to-do list. 


To get started: 


1. Download the free Guidebook app from the Apple Store or Android Market. 
2. Search for TLA Conference. You're ready to go! 


Everyone attending the conference will receive a printed booklet in their conference bag. This information is also available now on the TLA Conference website.

The conference countdown has begun! There's lots of work happening behind the scenes to make this year's TLA Conference in Knoxville a great success.

Send in your ballots

By now, everyone eligble should have received a ballot for TLA's future leadership. This year we're voting for not just Vice President and Secretary, but also ALA and SELA Councilor Representatives. These are only open every 3 years, so your vote makes an extra impact. 

While TLA is still using paper ballots, there are hopes for online voting in the future. The recent changes to the TLA website make it theoretically possible, but other procedural changes need to be made first and we didn't want to rush the change for this year.

Tell your Friends

Be sure to tell your Friends of the Library groups about Friday at the TLA Conference. It's the day TLA honors Friends with awards, a luncheon, and sessions focused on this important part of the library family. 


Friends can register for just Friday, March 23, and learn How to Be an Advocate Without Lobbying, hear about the Transformations of Three Friends Groups, and network with other Friends of Libraries from across the state. It's a great opportunity to re-energize and get inspired.

Save the Date: Library Legislative Day April 9th

This year's Tennessee Library Legislative Day is going to be on Monday, April 9th. 


We're starting with a short program around 11:30, and having a BBQ lunch on Legislative Plaza. Registrants will get lunch and a gift bag, as well as ample opportunity to meet with their legislators.

Banned Books Week Contest

Banned Books week is September 24 - October 1 this year.

Once again, the TLA Intellectual Freedom Committee is hosting a Banned Books Week Display Contest!

1. Take photographs of your amazing Banned Books Week display.  Photographs of BBW celebrations will be posted to TLA’s website and Facebook page.
2. Send the photographs, the name of your library, and any other pertinent details to: Karyn Storts-Brinks or Sarah Copeland  before October 8, 2011.

The TLA Intellectual Freedom committee will vote on the winner.  The popular vote on Facebook will be taken into consideration.  (Hint: “Like” your favorite display!)
